As you’re probably aware, the number of active shooter incidents continues to gradually rise in the United States. There have been peaks and valleys, but according to the FBI, between 2001 and 2017, the number of active shooter incidents per year has increased from 6 to 30 (400% jump), while the number of casualties has increased from 43 in 2001 to 729 in 2017 (1,595% jump).
Looking at the numbers provided by the FBI in terms of incident locations, we can see that a majority, or just over 60%, take place at commerce and education sites (middle schools, high schools, colleges, places of business, etc.). However, that still leaves a good percentage that take place in other locales, such as government properties, health care facilities and houses of worship.
What those numbers say should make each of us sit up and take notice. And that is, although we can profile a potential shooter’s traits as well as potential location targets,an active shooter event can happen anywhere and at any time.
That means that no matter where you live or what your community is like,as a law enforcement officer, you must be prepared for the worst.
When reflecting on past active shooter incidents, the majority of injuries are caused from not only bullets, but also by flying objects, shattered glass and even falling down due to stampede. That’s why protecting your chest, back and head are of the utmost importance before responding to an active shooter call.
At Chief Supply, we take this type of threat very serious and we know that you do as well. That’s why we are proud to introduce our own Active Shooter Response Kit to help you stay safe while protecting the community you care for so much.
