Hazardous materials (HAZMAT) and bio-hazards pose a serious threat to you and others. Perhaps you don’t deal with these issues on a day-to-day basis, or maybe your job does entail these hazards daily. Either way, preparation is the key to being ready for any and all potentially dangerous biohazard situations.

Hazardous materials include fuels, toxic chemicals, nuclear waste products, and biological, chemical, and radiological agents. These may be released as gases, liquid, solids, or a combination of all three.

Bio-hazards are substances which pose a threat to living organisms, notably humans. These include viruses and toxins, most often through hypodermic needles.

So how do you protect yourself from these potentially harmful substances and materials? Through decontamination (decon), which is the process of removing contaminates and hazardous materials from objects by cleaning them and disposing of them properly.

CHIEF Supply carries a wide variety of biohazard products to help you remain protected and safe, no matter what situation arises. Let’s take a look at several of them below and determine who may need them in which situations.

Bloodborne pathogen kits

Bloodborne pathogens are one of the greatest dangers for first responders. According to OSHA, “blood-borne pathogens are infectious microorganisms in human blood that can cause disease in humans. These pathogens include, but are not limited to, hepatitis B (HBV, hepatitis C (HVC) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Needle sticks and other sharps-related injuries may expose workers to bloodborne pathogens.”

As you can see, it’s vitally important that you protect yourself from these dangerous pathogens. The Certified Safety Blood-borne Pathogen Personal Protection Kit comes with everything you need to protect yourself, all while remaining economical in terms of not overburdening yourself with extra supplies you don’t need. The kit comes with an eye shield, infection control masks, gloves, bio-hazard bag, and antimicrobial towelette.

It is convenient enough for EMT personnel to throw in their jump bag, and for firefighters and police officers to carry in their vehicles so it’s ready at a moment’s notice, say for instance when you are called to an accident scene where there is a great amount of injury and blood.

Biohazard lock-up containers and needle disposal

As an EMT, you’ll likely be exposed to needles on a daily basis and you will need to know how to properly dispose of them. A biohazard lock-up container is designed with phlebotomist's in mind, but can be used by EMTs, firefighters, and police alike.

However, it’s best for EMTs to carry a sharps shaft with them. This is a transportable sharps (needle) container, and is perfect for EMT, fire, and even police officers because it’s small and conveniently fits into a jump bag or other type of bag, so it’s there when you need it.

Safetec Red Z Solidifier Shaker-top Bottle

If you’ve been around a scene where there are potentially harmful bodily fluids about, you know that you want to contain and dispose of these fluids as quickly as possible to avoid contamination and exposure to disease.

Safetec offers a fantastic product that solidifies the fluids and deodorizes the area as well. All you have to do is shake on the encapsulators on any number of fluids, including blood, vomit, and urine, and the fluid is absorbed in mere seconds. You then scoop up the granulated gel that is formed and dispose of it properly. This product is beneficial for anyone – EMTs, police, and firefighters – whose job may expose them to bodily fluids.

Lakeland Phase-Change Cool Vest

Whether you’re an EMT, firefighter, or police officer, if you’ve ever had to don a HAZMAT suit, then you know just how hot and suffocating they can be, especially if worn for any significant length of time.

Lakeland has engineered a cooling vest that users wear under the HAZMAT suit to help stay cool. In fact, Lakeland says the Phase-Change Cool Vest keeps a steady temperature of 58 degrees for up to three hours.
